Evaluation Report

As a student, my designer’s eye and skills are still developing. This unit allows me to expand my mind and knowledge outside my comfort zone. At first, I thought Territories and Boundaries project will be focusing on political issues and urban planning until I had a conversation with textile and graphics students, I never thought the term ‘Boundaries’ can be define in so many ways. For me, I decided to expend the knowledge of boundaries among people in a psychological way.

Through out this unit, I realized boundaries are everywhere in our daily life; they can be in any forms, some are visible such as gates, walls and doors, some are invisible such as ‘personal space’, relationship and street code. For this project, I aimed to discover participant’s psychological states and emotion when they are alone. Therefore, I set up questions for them to fill in and interview for them to share their stories. In order to study their facial expression and emotions, I have learnt some psychology knowledge and graphology. For example, one’s emotion development is based on their childhood as a foundation, the environment and people around them are highly affected how they behave in future and their psychology state. I have also learnt how to edit videos by using Adobe Premiere for the outcome.

I enjoy myself in this unit, it provides me opportunities to express my work in different method apart from making models and floor plans.  I am pound of myself for stepping out my comfort zone and try making something new, which I thought the outcome will end up as a disaster but it turns out better than I expected. As my work is a research based project therefore I repeatedly working on analysis, experiment and observation and this pattern had slowly influence my mind set. I started to focus on detail things that I would not normally pay attention on and discover new things everyday, such as the texture of material, gaps between the bricks and try to find out how things are made. The pattern also helps me with other studio work, it strengths my sense of material and observe more information from details, also being curious on the object’s story and its purpose.

Writing blog is like a public fieldnote to me. It records how a single question being developed to become a research and video, it is also a memo that allows me to reflect my work. I understand that a lot of processes, reflections, researches, material testings, questioning and analysis have to be done in order to success. I learnt that never afraid of making mistakes as it always lead you to some interesting result. For my future project, I hope I can design a space that is functional and meet inhibitions’ psychological needs. Furthermore, I enjoyed myself trying new method to present my idea in which I challenge myself to use different method or add more elements such as digital media to define and structure space for my future project.

Mini-exhibition

Today, I hold a mini-exhibition in room A336 at Chelsea College of Arts which is a great success. I presented the work nearly just as I planed, the scale are bit different as I have to adjust it based on the environment.

During the exhibition, people were watching the video and reading the documents and I was explaining the idea, lucky they understand most of the meaning before I explain it properly. I believed the reason why the exhibition went well because of the experience of material testing. From it, I can estimate what could went wrong, what should I prepare and how to solve the problem. Therefore, I am well-prepare to present the work. I also got some positive feedback.

There are few things I can improve for the future. Firstly, I choose pick the right period of time to hold exhibition as I present it during lunch time so there are not as much people as I expected. Secondly, considering the audio play from the projector which sounds differently compare with playing audio from laptop, I should add English subtitle in the video to avoid problems.

It is a good experience to me, I believe I can hold a better exhibition in the future.

Idea testing 2 – audience play role as psychologist

I played a role as a psychologist and studied emotions, personal space and psychological state of a human in this project. I hope that audiences can play a role as a psychologist as well, and understand the participant’s emotions and thoughts. Therefore apart from projecting the video to wall I also want to display the documents that the interviewees complete, from it, audience can study their unique handwriting and receive more information outside the video. Therefore, I decided to display documents on top of the table and place it under where the video projected. Audience are able to enjoy the video and the document at the same time.

Soon enough, I discovered a major problem. If I want to project on the wall, the projector will need to keep a distance, which when the audience get close to the documents the shadow will reflect to the wall.

I solve this problem by changing the location of the display object. If I place the projector on the table together with the documents and keep a distance with the wall, audiences are able to read the documents along with the video.

With the concept plan as a foundation, more ideas had been expended. Firstly, I created collages to estimate the outlook of design.

The idea is to hang platforms  in front of the wall and project video on it. It is inspire by Jasper Johns, when the video projects on both blocks and wall,  layers will be created. The idea comes from ‘the personal space zones’; refer to that there are 2 main fact in the theory, ‘intimate space’ and ‘outer-space’. The projections project on platforms represent the ‘intimate space’ and the projections on the wall represents the ‘outer-space’.

As I begin with material testing, I used two different material, acrylic board and white card. The light goes through the acrylic board as its transparency is really high, yet a light shadow of acrylic board will still project on the wall. On the other hand, the white card performed a really clear image and solid shadow reflected on the wall. I prefer the solid result as the layers are clearly defined which seems to be a boundary protecting the ‘intimate space’ that not allowing anyone to enter.

After the video is done, I started to implement the ideas show in drafts.

My first idea is to project the video on the wall and play as it is. The second idea shows the documents and a radio on top of the table, the concept is to play radio instead of video which allows audience to focus on the document and interviewee’s voice. The third idea is a extension of idea 1, the concept is to stick the documents on the wall and project the video on it. The final idea is to project a video on a drawing that shows different brush strokes which represents different character.

I agree that idea 2 is a different method of showing ideas compare with other ideas. Displaying a video or a audio makes differences, the amount of information that audience received will not be equal. ‘Television provide an experience which is not possible with radio, it also structures one’s awareness of time, space, and sound in ways that are simply not possible in ordinary experience… In a straightforward way, television provides avenues of expression not available on radio.’ stated by Kaha, C. (2015) I believe when the audience listen to the radio it is all about the imagination of the time, space and the outline of the interviewee.  It is true that the radio can not show the facial expression but the video can. Therefore, I decided to abandon this idea as I hope the audience can focus on interviewee’s facial expression as well.

Compare the rest concepts, I decided to have a further development based on idea 1 and 4 as idea 3 is sort of losing focus when the video is overlapping with document, the audience will not able to see clearly what is written on documents.

 

Finishing 2nd cut video

After revealing problems in 1st cut video, I immediately search for solutions in Adobe official website. There is two main problem need to improve, light contrast and volume.

Firstly, I changed the light contrast by editing luminosity curves which allows me to tone the colour of clips and unify them as one. Then I edit the volume in Audio Track Mixer session, I set the volume in around 12 to 6 dB.

In this case, people can listen carefully they way they speak and received information such as emotions. However, in order to keep their original voice and show how was the environment was like during interview therefore I did not reduce background noise.

 

Finishing up 1st cut video

 

At this stage, the 1st cut video is finally done.

As the main purpose of the video is to record the interview so I did not plan to make it like a Hollywood movie, in stead I plan to create it as simple as it can be. The style of the video will be a collection of interviewee sharing their stories. By following tutorial videos in youtube and Adobe official website, I am able to edit the video as I planned.

I found it more difficult than I imagine. I wasn’t sure if the clips is smooth enough to play and I found difficult choosing the right clip to put in the video as I wanted to put many of them but the video will be too long in result.

After it exported and played as a movie, I found a few problems to solve. First of all, the overall  colour tone is not balanced, as the clips are taken in different place so the light contrast are different. Secondly, the sound volume level is not unify; some with background noise and some are louder than other clips. Therefore, I will solve both contrast and volume problem by using Adobe Premiere.

 

Learn Adobe Premium

As an interior and spatial design student, normally I would not have chance to use and learn timeline-based video editing programs so it is something new to me. To start with, I searched online which program is more handy for a beginner and the result is iMovie and Adobe Premium.

Compare two programs, I decided to use Adobe Premium as main video editing program. It allows me to multitask while editing video by showing them on different sessions which means I will have a clear vision on how to edit the video.

iMovie is indeed suitable for beginner as it simplify lots of effects into buttons, all I have to do is just a click a button however it is also why I decided not to use it; as they are all pre-program so it means it may somehow limited the way I edit the video.

After I decided which program to use as main tool, I watched tutorial clips from Adobe website and youtube. I gained techniques by observing how others edit their videos and tried to apply in mine step by step.

Video storyboards

Before start filming I created 2 storyboards, from them I have a clear vision on how to film the interviewee, what is it going to look like and estimate what kind of problem I need to fix. I predicted if I show all the interviewees in one video it will end up around 10 minutes or more, therefore I will only edit around 3 to 4 interviewees in the work.

According to the concrete plan, the interview will take place in a room with black wall as a background, participants will have to sit on a chair and face to camera. I will need 2 cameras, 2 stands, extra batteries and light during shooting.

The idea is to show each interviewee by order. They will be answering questions and share their stories about childhood and their moodiness. Between each section, clips will fade out black and fade in showing the next interviewee. From this manner, audiences can easily classify each interviewee’s personality and analysis their psychological states from focusing on their body language and speak tone. However, as it is too simple audiences might lost interest on it if the video is too long.

My second concept is slight different compare with the first one. Participants can choose where they want to film and how they are filmed as long as they feel comfortable. For example, participant A can request standing next to the wall at home during filming. I will need 2 cameras, 2 stands, extra batteries and light ( if necessity) for shooting. In stead of showing each interviewee in order, I will mixed the clips and classify them in different sections depends on the question I asked. In this case, in each section will show the tension between participants however it may confuses the audiences a bit.

After compare 2 storyboards, I decided to use the second idea. I believe it will be more interesting when each section shows different participants’ personality and it forms a tension between. Moreover, I believe it will be more challenging than the first idea and it is what I aimed for in this project, to challenge myself and gain skills apart from Interior and spatial design.
